1 kg (2-1/2 lb) mince steak (pork or chicken can be used)
1 diced onion
2 diced carrots
1 cup diced turnip or swede or pumpkin
2 cups diced cabbage
2 « cups diced potatoes
5 cups stock - meat or vegetable
1 can tomatoes
1 can tomato soup
Brown mince in fry pan lightly and drain of excess fat. In a large boiler combine mince, vegetables, and water. Cook over a medium heat until vegetables are cooked. Add the tomatoes and soup and bring to the boil. Add salt and pepper to taste. If you like a thicker soup, thicken with « cup corn starch made into a paste with 1-cup water, then bring back to the boil and simmer for ten minutes. Serve with thick slices of crusty bread.
This soup is a good meal on a cold winter night.
